About the Artist/Teacher
I grew up in sunny Florida on
the “Space Coast”, where Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach meet (remember “I
Dream of Jeannie”?). I currently live in Rockledge, Florida, and I have been
teaching art in my Brevard County, Florida community for over 20 years
now. I work full-time for a local community college Monday through
Thursday (as an Academic Advisor), and enjoy teaching rather fluid art lessons
at a homeschool ministry on Fridays. I only taught at a public school once (K
through 6th), short-term. It was a valuable lesson for me as well as
the students, and I continue to draw on that experience to motivate myself to
help in the reconstruction of art education.
I have earned a Junior College Diploma in Art, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a Masters of Art in Teaching. Although I learned plenty about teaching, I have felt at a disadvantage because Masters in teaching was not geared toward art education I am so passionate about.
In addition to the online Masters in Art Education program, I am working on the illustration of three books/CDs (see Rainbow’s End). My favorite artistic subject is portraiture in any medium, and I especially enjoy the visual communication of emotion through portraits. My daughter, Laura, was born when I was in my early thirties. Now 24 years old, she has been my muse and model ever since she appeared. Laura is also an artist, and we often do art projects together.
I am interested in the learning styles of art students, and how they tie in to ethnicity and culture. Also of interest to me are the styles of portraiture produced, currently and historically, in Ireland or direct Irish lineage. I hope to someday do research in these areas.
